What is a VPN and why you don't need it for cloud storage?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server. The main purpose of a VPN is to hide your IP address and protect your internet traffic when using untrusted networks, such as public Wi-Fi in cafes or airports.

How does a VPN work?

When you connect to a VPN, all your internet traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN provider. From there, requests go to the internet using that server's IP address. This allows you to:

• Bypass geographical restrictions
• Protect data on public networks
• Hide your real IP address from websites and services

Why don't you need a VPN for cloud storage?

Shimkov Cloud is a file storage service, not an internet traffic anonymization tool. All connections to our service are already secured by the modern TLS 1.3 protocol, which provides:

• Encryption of all transmitted data
• Server authentication
• Protection against eavesdropping and data tampering

Important: Using a VPN with cloud storage can even reduce upload and download speeds due to the extra routing. For maximum performance, we recommend connecting directly.

When should you still use a VPN?

If you are in a country with strict internet censorship or using an open network without a password, a VPN can add an extra layer of protection. However, for most users under normal conditions, this is unnecessary.
